Sherlock Holmes the Hound of Baskerville

The book I got assigned was Sherlock Holmes the Hound of the Baskerville. The story begins in present day, at Sherlock’s famous home, 221B Baker Street, London and jumps right in with a mystery of the stick that had been left in the flat. As Holmes test’s Watson on his skills of solving mysteries they try to figure out where or whom the disowned object had come from, the pair then get the arrival of Dr. James Mortimer who is desperately seeks help. After the three discuss the sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville and the age old curse on Devonshire and the Baskerville family and mansion which is told as though it was a flashback, and follows a series of events being told, Holmes and Watson as per, have their suspicions. The story continue from here on out in present day, and due to Sherlock Holmes having prior arrangements elsewhere, Watson is sent to Devonshire on his own in order to crack the mysterious happenings. Whilst on his stay,  Watson comes across many different clues and experiences the strange occurrences in the Baskerville mansion but still fails to figure out the truth. By the end it takes the unexpected arrival of Sherlock Holmes to carry out the problem and solve the question that all of Devonshire have been asking. Sherlock and Watson can finally return to London in order to tie up loose ends and continue helping others.

What is CMYK?

When two RGB colors are mixed equally they produce the colors of the CMYK model, known as subtractive primaries. Green and blue creates cyan (C), red and blue creates magenta (M), and red and green creates yellow (Y). Black is added to the model because it cannot be created with the 3 subtractive primaries (when combined they create a dark brown). The K, or “key,” stands for black.

Why send a PDF to the printers via email?

Using PDF files keeps the file small so that it will be easier and quicker to send. This doesn't however affect the quality of the file, it will still be just as good as how you created it on. Additionally, whether you design your file on Illustrator, InDesign on Photoshop, saved as a PDF file it will be easiest to send on email.

Why should you Photoshop file be 300dpi wen sending to print?

This is so the file is kept to the best of quality and it will look better and more defined.

Use of colour: Bold or subtle? Limited colour palette or many colours?

Apart from the striking blood red colours at the bottom of the front of the bookmark, the most of the bookmark is very subtle to suit the style of the book. However I do think that the strong black colour does make the bookmark stand out a fair bit. I think that two colour (three included type) makes a limited colour palette, but I don't think it limits the creativity of the design.

Do you think the use of colour is successful (explain why)?

Yes, even though there is a limited use of colour, red, black and white, I think this shows of the character of the book at is is one that is dark and mysterious. The colours are interesting and follow the theme.

Use of text: Choice of typeface, scale and colour? does this reflect your theme well?

The type face I chose for my bookmark is Desdemona, ranging from scale 21.37pt to 32pt, all in the colour white. I believe that this type font does fit the theme and and suits the book well. Sherlock Holmes The hound of the Baskerville is a grand famous book and I wanted the typeface to look important and big to show off the name, Desdemona fit well with what I wanted but also added creativity to the bookmark as well as making it look enticing.

Use of imagery: Does this reflect the theme well? Is the imagery abstract or realistic? Is it hand drawn, computer drawn or photographic?

The silhouette images at the top of the bookmark symbolise Sherlock Holmes with a magnifying glass and the Hound of Baskerville, which does reflect the theme and book well. The figure of silhouette is quite well known so if people were to see the bookmark the would know which book it would link to Sherlock.  As well as this, the hound obviously signifies the 'Hound of Baskerville'...(the name of the book). The outlines of the silhouette would come across as realistic, as it is not cartoon like but all and all the imagery is unique and and comes across as abstract. The images i chose where computer drawn.

Hierarchy of information (text or imagery): what do you read first and why is your eye drawn to this? In your opinion is the hierarchy in the correct order.

When looking at the bookmark overall I think there are two main factors that your eye is drawn to, immediately your drawn into the hound and sherlock silhouettes at the top as they a big and bold and the central part of the design. The gradient from the black silhouettes to the deep red draws your eye into the bottom of the bookmark, so your led to read the title. I think the hierarchy is in the correct order, your first drawn to the design of the which is the point of the bookmark, your then lead to the title so you know what book it is.

Tools and techniques used: what tools/techniques did you use?

I found the two silhouette images on google to which I put into Illustrator, I then added the black rectangle that filled up the bottom of the bookmark and added a image I found on Google of blood. I linked together the three parts of the book mark so that it was all as one so then I was able to use the gradient tool to make the black to red gradient down to bookmark then added the type face. I used the paint tool at the side of the bookmark to mould it together. Finally, I took the design, copy and pasted it and reflected the bookmark so that I could design the back of it. However I just changed it all into black.

What is the most successful thing about your design or designs? What might you alter to make it more successful?

I think the most successful thing about my final bookmark is the silhouette design at the top. Not being my initial idea, it was a one off to go with this design however in the end it was what I liked best. Overall I think that this part of the bookmark portrays the story well and is simple yet intriguing. I think one thing I could of improved was the detailing in the bookmark, It is quite a simple design that I think if I improved and added more elements to it, it would be more alluring.

For our task we had to use Illustrator to create our own Kate Morross inspired work. We took work of hers that we personally liked and used it to give us ideas on how to design our work. The concept had to be based on us, our personalities and what we like. This is what I came up with..

PO9 Teen - Blue Wolf Productions

These 5 fonts saying the words 'Blue Wolf Productions' were the first intial ideas to my logo. Giving me an idea of what type of writing i'd like.

These next four logos are an expansion on the font I liked from the first initial ideas. Using the last idea, I added colour, patterns and borders to make the logo look more enticing and business like.
Finally, Below is a screen capture of the final logo, I chose this one because I thought it looked professional and fresh, also its not packed with colour it's simple and relates to the business. I added the caption in the blue line so the audience can see what the company includes.
